Hannah reusable eco-friendly products

Hannah was founded on the notion of providing a natural and environmentally friendly alternative to standard plastic and paper-based pads and period care products.

Made using certified organic cotton that is unbleached, non-dyed, non-scented and chemical free, the range of Hannah reusable menstrual products have been designed to improve the well-being of the Earth, as well as the people using the products.

Mainstream period care products have a huge environmental impact, with the average menstruating Australian using between 10,000-12,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime.  If single use, these products end up in landfill and take between 500-800 years to biodegrade.

This, in conjunction with the knowledge that many mainstream menstrual care products contain harmful chemicals including dioxins, herbicides and insecticides, has seen the interest grow in reusable period care products, such as the reusable cloth sanitary pads made by Hannah.

What are the benefits of using reusable period care products?

Switching to reusable period care products has a wide array of benefits, including:

  • Better for the environment:

Menstruating Australians buy an estimated 500 million pads and 300 million tampons each year, which as you can imagine, equates to a large amount of landfill waste. By switching to reusable products, you can have a positive environmental impact and reduce the amount of waste you contribute to landfill.

  • Better for your skin and body:

You can reduce your exposure to harmful and/or irritating ingredients by switching from mainstream single use menstrual products to reusable options. Standard disposable products contain plastics, fragrances, chemical gels, and adhesives, all of which you don’t want too close to this sensitive part of your body.

Hannah period care products are made from organic cotton that has not been exposed to any harmful chemicals and will reduce your exposure to hormone disrupting chemicals.

  • Increased comfort:

Most disposable pads contain plastic and adhesives which can be uncomfortable and irritating. Reusable cloth pads, made from organic cotton, are comfortable, breathable, and feel somewhat like underwear. The flexibility of the cotton materials used enables them to mould to the curves of the body increasing the comfort levels.

  • Save money:

A reusable cloth pad, though more expensive initially, will save you money in the long run.  If well cared for, a reusable pad can last anywhere from 12 months to 5 years and will replace hundreds of disposable pads and tampons over that time. This means that not only will the earth be thanking you, so will your wallet.

  • Convenient:

Reusable menstrual care products can help you avoid the hassle of having to stock up on single use period products each month. When you finish your cycle, all you need to do is ensure your cloth pads have been washed, dried, and packed away.

How many pads do I need?

When switching to cloth pads, it is important to understand that the number of cloth pads an individual needs will be dependent on a variety of factors and will differ from person to person.

The factors you need to take into consideration include:

  • Period cycle length
  • Your period flow (you will require more pads on heavier flow days)
  • Your washing routine
  • Whether you plan to use any other period care products

It is recommended that when making the switch to cloth pads, start small and just try using a few so you can see how it feels and understand the washing requirements. After a few cycles you will have a good understanding of how many reusable cloth pads you may need, and which sizes suit you best.

How to care for a reusable cloth pad?

Reusable Hannah cloth pads are easy to wash and care for. All you need to do is rinse your used cloth pad under cold water (cold water helps to prevent stains). Once rinsed, lather natural laundry detergent on the pad, and then soak in cold water.  You can soak overnight, or for at least a minimum of 6 hours.

Once the reusable pad has soaked, either hand wash or machine wash them. And then hang them up to dry, preferably under the sun if possible.

Some things you should avoid doing include:

  • Do not pack your cloth pads away until fully dried – this can take up to 48 hours
  • Do not bleach the cloth pads
  • Do not dry clean cloth pads
  • Do not machine dry your cloth pads
  • Do not use a fabric softener on the pads.

Following the care instructions for your Hannah cloth pad will ensure its longevity.
