Here at Ecolateral, we often say that sustainable living is a journey — not a destination. We want to help you navigate your journey, no matter what stage you’re at! When you’re looking into a particular product, we know that it can be difficult to choose an eco-friendly option that’s going to fit into your lifestyle and work for you

That’s why we’re introducing a new blog format to discuss the different eco-friendly options that are available to you. We’re calling it Good, Better, Best   Good option to start, a Better option when you’re ready, and the Best option to live sustainably!

Today, we’re going to talk about Natural Shampoo & Conditioner; taking into consideration things like plastic packaging, ingredients, longevity, refill-ability, and end-of-life options (is it recyclable or compostable?). Let’s get started!

Good: Natural Liquid Shampoo & Conditioner

First, let’s talk about natural liquid shampoos and conditioners! This is a great swap for those of you that are still using conventional supermarket-bought haircare products.

Your hair can take a little time to adjust when you switch to natural and organic haircare products. Typically, liquid shampoos and conditioners bought at the supermarket contain a bunch of chemicals to mimic clean, healthy, shiny hair: Sulfates (cheap lathering agent), Silicone (adds shine but suffocates the hair shaft), Phlalates, and Parabens (endocrine disruptors), just to name a few.

Making the switch to natural hair care is beneficial for your hair, safer for your skin, and better for your long-term health. We love the wide range of Dr Organic hair products — there’s something to suit everyone!

Another favourite brand of ours is Wild! We have the Wild Gentle Shampoo & Conditioner for sensitive scalps, the Wild Herbs & Lavender Shampoo & Conditioner for normal to oily hair, and the Wild Henna Shampoo & Conditioner for Dark Hair.

Better: Shampoo & Conditioner Concentrates & Refills

If you’re looking to take your sustainable haircare routine to the next level, we highly recommend shampoo and conditioner concentrates or refills! We know that only 9% of all plastic ever made has ever been recycled, so there’s a good chance that your shampoo and conditioner bottles aren’t being recycled…

Using solid-to-liquid concentrates or refilling an existing bottle with your favourite shampoo and conditioner are two simple ways to cut down on plastic waste.

If you’re not ready to make the transition to shampoo and conditioner bars (or, you just don’t like them!), we think you’ll love the Ethique Concentrates. When mixed with 300ml of boiling water, one 50g bar transforms into 350g of gorgeous shampoo or conditioner. All you need to do is Snap, Whisk, and Pour!

Ethique’s Concentrates are 100% organic, vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil free, plastic free, fair trade, and packaged in a Certified Compostable box. All the good stuff. Here at Ecolateral, we have a few different types for you to choose from:

Another fantastic option to cut down on plastic waste is to refill a bottle with your favourite shampoo or conditioner. If you visit one of our Ecolateral stores in Magill, Blackwood, Brighton or Adelaide CBD — you’ll find several different EnviroCare and Back to Basics shampoos and conditioners on our refill wall. We have:

Refilling your existing bottle means that you’re just paying for the product itself — not the packaging!

Best: Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

Here at Ecolateral, we LOVE Shampoo & Conditioner Bars! These highly-concentrated blocks of nourishing oils are natural, long-lasting, cost-effective, easy to use, zero-waste, and convenient for travelling. What’s not to love?

When we say that solid shampoo and conditioner bars are long-lasting, we really mean it! Typically, a single shampoo bar will last over 80 washes. If you wash your hair 2 times a week, that’s around 10 months. If you wash your hair 4 times a week, that’s around 5 months.

To use solid shampoo and conditioner bars, all you need to do is:

  1. Swipe your shampoo bar on your wet hair from root to tip 4-5 times.
  2. Lather and rinse out as usual.
  3. Swipe your conditioner bar from mid-lengths to ends 4-5 times.
  4. Rinse out and enjoy your clean, silky-soft tresses!

IMPORTANT TIP: Allow your solid haircare bars to dry out completely between uses. Doing so prolongs the life of your bars and prevents them from getting mushy. To do this, we recommend using the Block Dock Soap Holder. This nifty device sits on your shower wall (or elsewhere) and allows your shampoo, conditioner, or soap bar to dry.

When it comes to solid haircare, we can confidently say that brands like EthiqueViva La Body, and Shampoo With A Purpose are at the top of their game. These brands have developed highly-effective formulations for every hair type you can imagine.
